Transfer expert shares if Wolves could be in danger of losing Cunha this summer

With Wolves having had such a brilliant season, there is a strong feeling that a number of Molineux stars will be targeted in the summer transfer window.

Gary O’Neil has done a fantastic job since coming in and replacing Julen Lopetegui at the eleventh hour, with so many players improving under his guidance.

The three standouts have been Pedro Neto, Hwang Hee-chan and Matheus Cunha.

Previously, Wolves had a real goalscoring problem, but that has not been the case this term with that trio really shining bright.

Most of the talk has been about Neto, with many clubs interested in signing him. It’s very possible he’ll be leaving for big money.

Hwang did sign a new contract earlier this season and it is perhaps not too likely that he’ll be going anywhere.

But what of the currently injured Matheus Cunha? Molineux News spoke to transfer expert Graeme Bailey to get the lowdown…

Wolves forward Matheus Cunha could have transfer interest this summer, but sale not likely

Cunha has been amazing for Wolve this term, making considerable improvements from last season.

He has seriously improved his end product, and has scored 11 goals and made seven assists in 28 appearances across all competitions.

Cunha joined Wolves in January 2023 for £44 million from Atletico Madrid so obviously hasn’t been at the club for too long.

He’s now one of Wolves’ best players, and his performances this term have had some wondering if he could be someone other clubs look to poach this summer.

But HITC journalist Graeme Bailey does not anticipate Cunha being sold this summer. Especially with Neto’s stock so high.

“I wouldn’t say no, Cunha’s a player that’s come in from Atletico and he’s just really impressed in this system,” he said.

“I don’t think there will be a necessity to sell him, but it wouldn’t surprise me if we saw a bit more interest.

“The problem is that when players are in England now and on good money, I know he’s only at Wolves but he’s still going to be on

a very good contract and Wolves paid a lot of money for him so it puts him out of reach for the most of Europe already. He’s on a bigger deal here now than he was on at Atletico for instance.

“Cunha’s young, he’s only 24 still, he may have the ambition to play for Europe’s elite again so I think he’s one who is more likely to stay but it does look like Neto might be the one [to leave] this summer.”

Cunha has potential to become another Ruben Neves-type figure at Wolves

Cunha is a player who Wolves should be looking to keep at the club for as long as possible.

The £60,000-a-week man had a bit of a slow start at Molineux, but this term we have truly seen what he is all about – both on and off the pitch.

Cunha is a really unique player, with the way he carries the ball and drives at defences.

O’Neil deserves credit for creating a system that has really gotten the best out of him.

Cunha isn’t just a top player, he is also a fantastic character. His infectious personality always shines through in videos released by the club, and you can tell that all the players love him.

Quite possibly, he has all the makings of another Wolves icon, just like Ruben Neves.

Many Wolves fans will certainly hope he spends as long at Molineux as the Portuguese did.
