‘Exceptional’ Liverpool player set for recall v Brentford this weekend amid Premier League transfer interest

Liverpool beat Ipswich Town 2-0 on Saturday but Arne Slot will already be ramping up preparations to face Brentford this weekend.

Reds fans were excited after an impressive pre-season but Liverpool started a little slowly against newly-promoted Ipswich Town.

Arne Slot’s men improved after the break though and secured a 2-0 win with Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah on the scoresheet.

Slot will be delighted to have that first Premier League win under his belt but the attention already turns to this weekend’s opponents, Brentford.

The Bees are unlikely to have their star striker available with Ivan Toney wanted in Saudi Arabia, but Liverpool could bring one player back into their fold.

Joe Gomez latest ahead of Liverpool v Brentford

Eyebrows were raised when Joe Gomez was left out of the Liverpool squad to face Ipswich.

Gomez wasn’t expected to start but his versatility across the back four would have been valuable on the bench.

Reports indicated that Gomez wants to leave Liverpool for more first-team action elsewhere despite having three years left on his contract.

Many may expect Gomez to be frozen out ahead of a potential transfer but he could actually come back into the squad this weekend.

Sky Sports claim that Gomez is ‘training well’ and is now back in contention to feature against Brentford this weekend.

A starting role seems a little unlikely but Slot substituted Jarell Quansah at half-time on Saturday and was praised for his decisiveness.

Ibrahima Konate came on against Ipswich and may get the nod against Brentford, but Gomez offers another option at the back.

Liverpool may also need Gomez to be fit and available given that Sepp van den Berg appears to be closing in on a departure.

Reports suggest that Van den Berg is set to leave Liverpool with both Brentford and Bayer Leverkusen making moves for him.

Gomez suitors in the Premier League

Gomez – once hailed as ‘exceptional’ by former boss Jurgen Klopp in quotes given to The Mirror – may still leave Liverpool, especially with so much Premier League interest emerging.

Aston Villa are interested in Gomez as Unai Emery eyes defenders just in case Diego Carlos moves on.

Reports even claim that Chelsea want Gomez with the Stamford Bridge spending spree showing no signs of slowing down.

Newcastle United were close to signing Gomez earlier this summer and may yet rekindle their interest having so far failed to agree a deal for Marc Guehi.

Liverpool won’t be short of interest in Gomez but may be minded to keep him around the first-team squad until a move really firms up.
