Gary O’Neil sack latest: Major Wolves update from top source

Wolves remain fully behind Gary O’Neil despite their terrible start to the new campaign, sources have told Football Insider.

Wolves chiefs ‘fully behind’ O’Neil after Thelin speculation

The Molineux club sit bottom of the Premier League table with just one point and a goal difference of minus 12.

However, it is believed Wolves chiefs want to back O’Neil to turn things around in the coming weeks.

They have already faced Chelsea, Arsenal, Newcastle and Liverpool this term – and are next in action against Man City.

Sources say Jeff Shi and other top-ranking chiefs feel O’Neil is the man to turn things around at Molineux.

Wolves handed the former midfielder a fresh contract at the club earlier this year – keeping him around until June 2028.

Reports have suggested Jimmy Thelin, 46, is being tracked by Wolves after his impressive start to life with Aberdeen.

However, Football Insider revealed on Monday (14 October) that they are highly unlikely to have the Swede on their radar to replace O’Neil if results don’t improve.

The Molineux club and fans will take comfort in being one of four Premier League sides yet to win this term – with Crystal Palace, Ipswich and Southampton also struggling.

Wolves face Palace and the Saints next month in two crunch fixtures.

O’Neil took over on the eve of the 2023-24 campaign with the club in disarray after Julen Lopetegui’s exit but still managed to achieve a 14th-place finish and comfortably avoid the drop.
