Wolves’ new Gary O’Neil sack plan emerges – Insider

Wolves are still considering sacking Gary O’Neil after their defeat to Man City despite the circumstances of the defeat.

This is according to former Man United, Tottenham and West Brom scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that results must change if the boss is to save his job.

Wolves fell to a 2-1 defeat at Molineux after a 97th-minute header from John Stones despite a resolute defensive performance to limit the reigning champions’ chances.

O’Neil, meanwhile, was left frustrated by the decision to award the late goal despite an on-field VAR check for a foul on the goalkeeper.

Despite the manner of the defeat, it meant Wolves have now picked up just one point from their opening eight Premier League games so far this season.

Pressure on O’Neil’s job has continued to grow as a result, and there is a feeling that if results don’t improve soon, the board will be forced to make a decision.

Wolves weighing up Gary O’Neil sack despite Man City performance

Football Insider revealed on 13 October that both Graham Potter and David Moyes will be considered as possible replacements for O’Neil should he be sacked.

Brown, who has worked closely with under-pressure managers in previous roles including at West Ham and Sunderland, insisted that the pressure on the Wolves boss will only be eased by a turn of results rather than performances.

“That pressure will still be there unless he can manage to turn their results around.

“They play some good football at times and they’ve got some impressive players, but if they keep losing games, that’s not good enough.

“Management of games is still a vitally important part of the game, and they don’t seem able to do that.

“At the end of the day, you need to keep the ball out of the net. They’ve conceded the most in the league this season.

“Even though their defensive performance against City was impressive, those are two more goals they’ve let in. It’s not good enough.

“I’ve heard the board are keen to stick behind the manager, but if results continue the way they have been, they will have to pull the trigger.”
