Aston Villa will look to add a midfield player to their ranks in January to prevent burnout for Youri Tielemans, according to Ian Darke.
The Belgian has started every game in the Premier League and Champions League so far in a rigorous schedule for Unai Emery’s men, with his responsibility increasing due to injuries to the likes of Amadou Onana and Jacob Ramsey.
Villa’s form has dwindled in recent weeks but they now look to be recovering, having beaten Brentford, Southampton and RB Leipzig within the space of six days.
“Villa are pretty well-served up front, but I think some of their poor form before their recent wins might see them reassess a few plans in January,” TV commentator Darke exclusively told Villa News.
“Watkins and Duran are there, Jacob Ramsey to come back in, they’ve missed Onana. They do look a bit vulnerable defensively.
“They may look to pick up a player to add to that central midfield area, so Tielemans isn’t playing all the time. It can ease the pressure for Unai Emery.”
Aston Villa chase midfield targets in January
It will be intriguing to see how Aston Villa approach the winter window, with their squad having largely coped well with the intense schedule despite their blip in form.
The club have recently been linked with Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli [TBR Football, 6 December] who has fallen out of favour in Turin, along with teenage Sunderland star Jobe Bellingham [TBR Football, 11 December], formerly of rivals Birmingham City.
The Villa hierarchy will be braced for bids landing on the table for their own players – most notably Jhon Duran, who has caused shockwaves with his impact from the bench this season
