The Indiana Fever announced Sunday that they were waiving guard Grace Berger, in a post that thanked her for her time with the team. The guard appeared in 48 games over two seasons with the Fever after being selected seventh overall in the 2023 WNBA Draft. Berger struggled to crack the Fever’s rotation, especially after the addition of Caitlin Clark, much to the chagrin of local fans who had watched Berger play since college.
She saw a respectable 14.6 minutes per game as a rookie with the Fever, during which she averaged 4.2 points and 1.9 assists per game. After Clark’s arrival, her time was cut to just 9.3 minutes per game. She also appeared in just 11 games in 2024 after seeing action in 26 games the year before.
Berger left college as Indiana’s all-time winningest player, helping her coach Teri Moren bring the program to new heights – including a Big Ten Title and an Elite Eight appearance. She’s the program’s seventh-leading scorer of all time and second in assists. If Berger lands with a team that has guard minutes available for her, there’s little doubt that she can produce at the professional level. Of the 26 games she appeared in during the 2023 seasons, Berger reached double-digits in scoring seven times.
Her assist-to-turnover ratio was nearly 2:1 that season, and she shot 47% from 3-point range plus 84% at the free-throw line. Berger has also looked strong against professional competition overseas. She’s spending the 2024-25 season with Turkish club Omanspor, where she averages 35.5 minutes per game. As one of the team’s lead guards, she’s returned to her college production, scoring 13.3 points and 3.9 assists per game.
With free agency ongoing, look for teams like the Chicago Sky or the new Golden State Valkyries to add a proven scorer like Berger to their backcourt. As Berger she during her college career, Berger is able to create her own shots, facilitate for others, and shoot well enough to make opponents respect her from all over the floor. More than anything, Berger is a proven winner. She won 74.6% of all the college games she appeared in at Indiana, and 83.1% of her home games.
The Indiana Fever have not won many games at all since she got there, but went 6-2 in games in which she played 20 minutes or more as a rookie. Whichever team ends up signing Berger will get a guard who will do anything the team needs her to do to win games.
