Plymouth Argyle are reported to be among a number of clubs interested in signing midfielder Ryan Ledson, who is leaving Preston North End this summer after they decided not to offer him a new contract.
The Daily Record has linked the 27-year-old to Hibernian, who are set to finish third in the Scottish Premiership, so there is the prospect of the Edinburgh-based club playing European football next season. Their head coach is David Gray, who had two loan spells with the Pilgrims from Manchester United in 2009.
Argyle also has an interest in signing Ledson, according to the report in the Daily Record, along with Oxford United, Steven Schumacher’s Bolton Wanderers, and Huddersfield Town.
Ledson spent seven years at Preston after joining them from Oxford in 2018, and he made a total of 144 starts plus 71 substitute appearances and scored seven goals. His last home game at Deepdale was off the bench when North End lost 2-1 to Argyle on the penultimate Saturday of the 2024/25 Championship campaign.
Oxford finished 17th in the Championship, so they are set for a second season back at that level, while Argyle have dropped into League One, where their rivals will include Bolton and Huddersfield.
Argyle will be in the market for midfielders this summer given the fact that Darko Gyabi has returned to Leeds United after being on loan, while young duo Josh Bernard and Will Jenkins Davies have been released.
In addition, experienced central midfielder Jordan Houghton is out of contract, although he has been offered a new deal to extend his stay at Home Park.
In his final interview with Preston’s in-house media, Ledson said, “I’ve had an unbelievable time, unbelievable memories. I probably didn’t expect to be here this long and have so many good times here.
“I’m so thankful for it all to have happened. It’s a sad time leaving, especially when this club means so much to me, but I’ve had the best seven years that I could have asked for. I’d just like to say thanks for everything.
“It’s an amazing football club and one that, hopefully, one day, I’ll be back at. I’d love nothing more than to come back to Deepdale, even if it was to play for an opposition and just to see you all here. Just a massive thank you for everything.”
Argyle announced earlier this week that Tom Randle had been appointed as their new head of recruitment after the departure of Jimmy Dickinson.
Randle has held a number of previous roles within football, including being the head scout of Belgian club Cercle Brugge when Pilgrims’ boss Miron Muslic was there. He had been acting as Argyle’s head of recruitment for the past month.
