Charlton Athletic are looking to take a cloak-and-dagger approach towards their transfer business as they know that competition for Championship targets is going to be fierce, according to journalist Richard Cawley.
The Addicks will be playing Championship football next season after earning promotion through the playoffs in League One following a remarkable second-half-of-the-season run.
The challenge will be tougher given the quality of the teams that are already there in the second division.
Nathan Jones will, therefore, have to get his transfers right but knows that signing players from the same division will not be easy.
In League One, Charlton were one of the teams with the bigger budgets and were also a massive lure.
The club realizes now the picture is more difficult and is ‘looking to do their business cloak and dagger.’
They have shown how measured they are going to be by signing Sonny Carey from Blackpool using a similar approach.
Result | Competition |
---|---|
Charlton Athletic 1-0 Leyton Orient | Playoffs |
Charlton Athletic 1-0 Wycombe Wanderers | Playoffs |
Wycombe Wanderers 0-0 Charlton Athletic | Playoffs |
Carey, who played 33 League One matches and scored eight goals last term, will join them on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract at the end of this month.
Yet another player from League One, Ethan Galbraith, has also been linked.
Galbraith, a product of Manchester United’s youth academy, could be a utility signing, having played multiple roles on the pitch.
The club has been linked with a move for young goalkeeper Sonny Inzalaco, who is keen on moving to England.
With the transfer window now open once again, Charlton will be looking for more surprise captures soon.
