Former Plymouth Argyle loan signing set to leave German club

Tymoteusz Puchacz, who played for the Pilgrims last term, has not joined up for the start of pre-season training with Holstein Kiel

Tymoteusz Puchacz appears poised to leave German club Holstein Kiel after spending the second half of last season on loan to Plymouth Argyle.

The Poland international left-back joined the Pilgrims in January, and there was an option to buy as part of the loan arrangement, but that has not been taken up. Puchacz made a total of 13 starts and five substitute appearances for Argyle as they were relegated from the Championship to League One.

His last game was off the bench near the end of the 2-1 defeat away to Middlesbrough on April 18, and he did not even make the matchday squad for the final two fixtures, away to Preston North End and against Leeds United at Home Park.

Puchacz joined Holstein Kiel from Union Berlin last summer on a contract until 2028 after their promotion to the Bundesliga. He went on to play in 10 league games, including five starts, before he moved to Argyle on loan in January, with his debut coming in the shock 1-0 Emirates FA Cup third-round win away to Premier League club Brentford.

Holstein Kiel ended up finishing in 17th position out of 18 teams in the Bundesliga last term and therefore have been relegated back to 2. Bundesliga. The club began pre-season training yesterday (Monday), but Puchacz was not with the squad.

An update on the club’s official website said, “Fiete Arp, Thomas Dähne, and Tymoteusz Puchacz will also not participate in our training for the time being. The trio is currently on leave for contract negotiations with other clubs.”

Meanwhile, former Argyle head coach Miron Muslic’s new club, 2. Bundesliga side Schalke, continues to hold an interest in signing Nikola Katic, another of the Pilgrims’ loan signings last season, on a permanent transfer from FC Zurich.

German media outlet Bild has reported, “The likelihood that Muslic will land his dream defender Nikola Katic has increased further due to the departures of Paul Seguin and Lino Tempelmann. The clubs have come closer in negotiations—Schalke is trying to keep the fixed transfer fee below €500,000, offering various bonuses.”

Schalke sporting director Frank Baumann told Bild, “We would like to sign Nikola, but not at any price. Of course, we also have a plan B.” Katic made 16 starts and one substitute appearance for Argyle under Muslic.
