After Girona drew 1-1 with Athletic Bilbao on Monday night, Real Madrid maintained their lead in Spain’s La Liga on goal difference.
Real Madrid and Girona both have 35 points, while Atletico Madrid and Barcelona have 31 each, and Athletic is fifth with 25. Girona, who finished 10th last season, has won 11 of 14 matches this season. Real Madrid had previously defeated Cadiz 3-0 earlier in the day.
The game was scoreless at halftime until an unmarked Viktor Tsygankov scored from the far post in a counter-attack to put Girona ahead in the 55th minute, and Inaki Williams shook off two defenders with a left-foot shot to level the score in the 77th minute with a pass from Oihan Sancet Tirapu that split the home team’s defense in midfield.
Both teams were aggressive in the first half, creating numerous chances but unable to capitalize.
Only five minutes in, Gorka Guruzeta gained space from Mikel Vesga’s cross, but his right-foot shot was blocked by Athletic keeper Paulo Gazzaniga, who subsequently saved another from Oscar de Marcos.
Girona midfielder Yangel Herrera then had a header ruled out for offside in the 28th minute after receiving a feed from Savio, who provided a significant threat to the visitors on the left throughout the game.
