After playing out a chaotic and dramatic six-goal thriller that went to extra-time, Celtic beat Rangers on penalties to lift the League Cup.
That’s the first piece of silverware towards another possible Treble campaign and yet another trophy to the name of Brendan Rodgers.
With Celtic fans still in a joyous mood after that victory – Daizen Maeda netted the winning spot-kick – Ally McCoist shared his thoughts on the match.
Ally McCoist hails ‘classic’ League Cup final as Celtic beat Rangers
McCoist was correct in saying that it was an ‘absolutely thrilling’ encounter from start to finish’ and how it was nothing but a pure ‘classic’.
Not only were their six goals, but all were different goalscorers, with extra-time itself, amazingly enough, not resulting in any goals being scored.
McCoist highlighted the ‘brilliant atmosphere’ during the game and how he would like the Premiership games to go back to away fans being allowed back in, as he told talkSPORT (16/12/24 at 6:10 am).
“What a game, what a game of football,” said McCoist. “It was absolutely thrilling from start to finish. It was genuinely a classic.
“Obviously disappointed with the result, but what a game of football. The atmosphere in the place. If there ever was an advert to get away fans back in the league, that was it yesterday. The stadium split 50-50. Brilliant atmosphere. They served us up a classic.”
Celtic and Rangers gap
As McCoist was raving about the quality of the match and his disappointment, talk then turned to how Rangers performed.
Not even the ardent of Celtic fans will argue that Rangers performed very well, in fact, they probably couldn’t have given more.
But Jeff Stelling suggested that the Rangers supporters ‘must be encouraged’ because he feels ‘the gap has closed’.
And McCoist seemed to agree with those delusional comments, as they further added on talkSPORT.
“Rangers didn’t walk away with a trophy,” said Stelling. “But their fans must be encouraged that the gap has closed.”
McCoist responded: “Absolutely, Jeff. Clearly you want to win it. That goes without saying. But the level of improvement in the last couple of games. The Spurs game and the game yesterday. Yes, it’s pretty evident. As disappointed as it will be, I have got to say the upturn in form in the last few games, hopefully, really encouraging.”
Perhaps someone needs to remind the duo that Celtic are 11 points clear in the league and heading towards the knockout stages of Champions League football.
Even when Rangers were at their best. They still lost. But if these ‘encouraging’ few weeks for Philippe Clement’s side are them thinking that the gap is ‘closing’, then by all means, everyone at Celtic hopes he stays on!
