Jeff Bezos was not blocked from buying the Washington Commanders by former owner Dan Snyder due to a personal rift, with the Amazon founder ‘simply outbid’
Jeff Bezos, the billionaire Amazon founder, wasn’t snubbed by former Washington Commanders owner Dan Snyder over a personal grudge when it came to selling the NFL team. Instead, Bezos was “simply outbid” after showing interest in buying the franchise.
The Commanders were eventually snapped up for a colossal $6.05 billion by a consortium led by Josh Harris, which includes basketball legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson. According to the Financial Times, an insider said: “I don’t think Snyder would have not sold to them if Jeff came in with a bid of $7 [billion].”
Previously, it was rumoured that Bezos’s ownership of the Washington Post, which ran an expose revealing a toxic workplace and sexual harassment during Snyder’s reign, was the reason he was blocked from the bidding war. This report had been a thorn in Snyder’s side, leading to pressure from other NFL owners to put the Commanders on the market.
Publications such as The Athletic and the New York Post suggested that the negative press from Bezos’s newspaper was the barrier to his Commanders bid. However, this narrative is now being questioned with a suggestion he was simply usurped by someone willing to pay more to acquire the franchise.
With a staggering fortune of $204 billion, Bezos is currently the world’s second-richest person, trailing only Elon Musk as per Forbes’ rankings. His empire extends beyond Amazon to include Whole Foods, Audible, Twitch, and MGM, yet he remains absent from the sports team ownership scene.
In 2022, Bezos gave a coy answer when asked by CNN if he was interested in investing in an NFL team. “Well, I grew up in Houston, Texas, and I played football growing up as a kid,” he said. “It is my favorite sport; we’ll just have to wait and see.”

Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils owner Harris took ownership of the franchise in July 2023, surpassing the Denver Broncos as the most expensive sports team sale in history.
Harris and his team have made sweeping changes after a disappointing season, firing head coach Ron Rivera and placing former Atlanta Falcons HC Dan Quinn in charge. And there is hope a new era is dawning for a franchise that has not been a genuine championship contender for decades, with quarterback Jayden Daniels taken with the No.2 overall pick in April’s draft.
