Plymouth Argyle backed manager Wayne Rooney in the summer transfer window with some eye-catching deals struck at Home Park.
Plymouth Argyle used the loan and free transfer markets well but there were some cash signings from the Pilgrims as they look to consolidate their place in the Championship.
Daniel Grimshaw and Kornel Szucs have both started well after coming in for transfer fees but Rami Al Hajj was the statement signing, bringing him in from Danish side Odense BK as a new attacking midfield threat.
He wasn’t the first attacking midfielder on the radar though, with Elfsborg’s Michael Baidoo eyed.
And, with the Ghanaian continuing to star, Plymouth Argyle may rue not being able to bring him in.
Starring on the big stage
Baidoo was an ambitious target for Plymouth Argyle amid his growing stock in Sweden’s Allsvenskan.
When Rooney addressed the rumours of a move for the 25-year-old and admitted it was looking unlikely, Baidoo had seven goals and four assists to his name in the league. He has since added another three to his tally in Sweden’s top-tier while starring in the Europa League too.
Elfsborg might have only won once in the Europa League but they’ve been a great test for some far stronger teams. They were narrowly beaten 3-2 by AZ Alkmaar before a 1-0 win over Serie A giants Roma, with Baidoo scoring the decisive goal in a historic win.
The former Argyle target was on the scoresheet again as Elfsborg were beaten 4-3 by Galatasaray in Turkey. It means that overall, playing as both an attacking midfielder and striker, Baidoo has 15 goals and seven assists in 37 games this season.
Not for a lack of trying
Plymouth Argyle may look at Baidoo as one that got away but having reportedly made a record bid for his services, there’s not much more they could have done to try and get the statement deal done.
His success since the failed summer offer shows that the Pilgrims uncovered quite the talent in targeting a move for the Ghana star.
