Arne Slot has spoken very highly of Matheus Cunha before Liverpool meet Wolves in the Premier League. Despite the fact Wolves sit just outside the relegation zone, Cunha has been in sensational form, which has seen a number of big clubs take note.
From his 25 appearances in all competitions, the Brazilian has contributed to 16 goals, with his strike against Aston Villa ending talk of a January switch. In his celebration, Cunha made it clear he was staying at Molineux, with that stance officially confirmed by his contract announcement a few hours later.
Cunha is undoubtedly Wolves’ talisman and has therefore played a key role in the majority of his side’s victories so far this season. This weekend they meet Liverpool at Anfield, and the 25-year-old will need to be at his best if Vitor Pereira’s side are to take anything from the game.
Slot is, seemingly, aware of that as well, with the Dutchman giving a glowing and very clear verdict of the forward. “Matheus Cunha is a quality player, and he has the quality to play for one of the top five teams in England,” he said during his pre-match press conference.
“If you go to the Dutch league and look at the team in 17th place, then there is no player who could play for Ajax, PSV, or Feyenoord.” That first sentence from Slot certainly seems to suggest that he won’t be surprised if Cunha is playing for one of Liverpool’s rivals next season.
The need for a marquee attacking addition became quite clear after 75 minutes against Leicester City until Mikel Merino stepped up off the bench. Introduced for Raheem Sterling, the Spaniard scored twice as a striker to help keep the Gunners’ title hopes alive.
Merino being Arsenal’s short-term solution in attack is certainly an option, but signing a player like Cunha in the summer is still quite clearly a priority for Arteta.
