VAR duo Alan Muir and Frank Connor have reportedly been axed for this weekend’s matches after the penalty controversy in the Premier Sports Cup final.
It’s reported the pair will not be in action this weekend after their major role in the showpiece final between Celtic and Rangers at Hampden.
There has been major fallout over the failure to award a penalty to Rangers in extra-time after Vaclav Cerny was fouled by Liam Scales.
The Rangers winger was pulled down by the Celtic defender with replays showing Cerny’s foot was on the line of the penalty area when he was fouled.
According to IFAB laws, a penalty should have been awarded.
Law 12 clearly states: “If a defender starts holding an attacker outside the penalty area and continues holding inside the penalty area, the referee must award a penalty kick.”
Now, The Daily Record claim Willie Collum has cut both Muir and O’Connor from duties this weekend with neither official involved in any Scottish Premiership fixture.
The rest of the referee team from Hampden’s final will be involved in matches this weekend with John
Beaton refereeing Hearts against St Johnstone, David McGeachie VAR assistant for Aberdeen against Hibs and Jonathan Bell a linesman for Motherwell against Kilmarnock.
Rangers CEO Patrick Stewart is awaiting a response from the Scottish FA after demanding answers over the missed penalty call.
He said: “The manner which we lost was hard to take, and as I think people will know, I have spoken
with the SFA to ask for an explanation about the non-awarding of a penalty in extra-time, so I will wait to hear what the SFA have to say about that.”
