David Edgar reacts as update emerges on Rangers defender Leon Balogun

David Edgar from Heart and Hand is not overly thrilled as Rangers are set to keep Leon Balogun on for another season.

The 35-year-old’s deal at Ibrox runs out at the end of June, and the Scottish Sun reported on 27 May that he will be signing a one-year extension.

Edgar states that despite liking the centre-back, it is something that the club always does, which is giving new short-term extensions to veterans.

He wrote on Twitter: “I like big Leon but isn’t this just doing what we always do? I’m not going to lose any sleep over it as he’s the only out-of-contract player who I think you can make a case for (plus as I say I like him) but surely he has to be the only one?”

Leon Balogun merits a one-year extension at Rangers

Edgar’s reservations about Gers extending Balogun’s deal for another year reflect a broader concern about the club’s approach to player retention.

While the 35-year-old has been a reliable performer for the club, particularly under Philippe Clement, the decision to keep him on is seen by some as a continuation of a pattern where the club extends the contracts of older players rather than investing in younger talents.

However, Balogun’s performance last season does justify the decision to some extent.

Despite not being a celebrated signing, he proved his worth by providing a reliable defensive presence.

His experience and leadership were invaluable, especially during key matches.

Players like Ryan Jack and John Lundstram, who have been less effective, should be evaluated critically.

While Balogun’s extension is understandable given his performance, it should not overshadow the need for a broader strategy that balances experience with youth and potential.
