Departing Portsmouth forward emerges as potential Wycombe Wanderers target

Portsmouth forward Kusini Yengi is a potential target for Wycombe Wanderers, the Bucks Free Press has said.

Portsmouth are heading for another important transfer window after the conclusion of the 2024/25 season. Pompey achieved their goal for the campaign, staving off an immediate return to League One.

However, to progress, decisions had to be made over player releases, and among the popular figures let go was Kusini Yengi.

Now though, it is claimed the departing Portsmouth forward could have an option in League One amid interest from Wycombe Wanderers.

The Bucks Free Press said Yengi is a player the Chairboys ‘could be interested in,’ with reporter James Richings since clarifying on X that the Australian attacker is indeed ‘being looked at’ by the Adams Park outfit following their League One play-off semi-final heartbreak against Charlton Athletic.

Yengi will be available for nothing following his Pompey release, presenting a shrewd striker option for EFL clubs this summer. The powerful forward should not be short of options despite his injury struggles limiting his championship appearances in the 2024/25 campaign.

A hit with Portsmouth

26-year-old Yengi joined Portsmouth in the summer of 2023 as Mousinho set about revamping the ranks in his first summer window at Fratton Park.

The Adelaide-born forward quickly became a popular figure among supporters, regularly impressing when given chances either in place of or off the bench for Colby Bishop.

He managed 13 goals and two assists in 31 games across his maiden season. He proved to be a real threat at the League One level but has ultimately struggled to make the step up to the Championship, with injury preventing him from building any real momentum.

The right decision to let Yengi go?

Given his popularity, Portsmouth fans likely wouldn’t have had a problem with Yengi staying put and getting a second chance at proving himself in the Championship.

However, many agree that the decision not to offer him a new deal is justifiable too. Ultimately, he struggled to make an impact when available, and Pompey are out to strengthen, so fresh competition for talisman Bishop will be wanted.

Yengi’s release paves the way for such additions to be made. And, hopefully, the 11-cap Australia forward will be able to get back to his dangerous best wherever he lands next.
