Derby County Join The Pursuit For Promising Striker

Published

on

Paul Warne has started to plan ahead for the upcoming Championship campaign. Derby County have placed a bid for St. Johnstone striker, Adama Sidibeh.

In readiness for the Rams’ return to the second-tier, the club have began the search for a new goalscorer in the hope of Championship survival. The 25-year-old is currently plying his trade in the Scottish Premiership for St. Johnstone and has scored three goals in his last three games.

Sidibeh has been with the Saints since February this year and has appeared 15 times in this pivotal campaign. The Englishman’s five goals since joining have been nothing short of essential; St. Johnstone only survived a relegation play-off by besting Ross County on goal difference.

Derby’s retained list saw some attacking-minded players leave on free terms, including: Dwight Gayle and Martyn Waghorn. Warne’s side also face an uncertainty around James Collins’ future at Pride Park, but both parties seem optimistic. This means that a summer re-haul of the front-line is necessary if the former Rotherham United coach wants to keep his side up this season.

The two other Championship sides who have lined up approaches for the 25-year-old, are recently-relegated Burnley and Michael Carrick’s Middlesborough. Furthermore, French outfit Metz, are scouting Sidibeh in the hope that they too can bolster their attack.

Despite playing frequently in England ahead of his move to Scotland, Sidibeh is yet to feature in the EFL and could if a move materialises with one of the keen suitors. Stints at AFC Blackpool, Nomads, and Rylands have been the striker’s only experience of professional football.

It’s worth noting that the St. Johnstone player is sparking interest on an international level too. Senegal and The Gambia are currently fighting to gain Sidibeh’s services, with a decision on his national allegiance yet to be made.

Writer’s View

With a healthy influx of money coming into County, following their promotion from League One, Sidibeh could be worth the punt and may be used initially as an impact sub. With little experience of the competitive leagues, the 25-year-old will have a lot to learn in order to work his way up the Derby ranks.

Having struck a good spell of form recently, and steering his side away from relegation, the striker is clearly someone who can step up at important moments and has a clinical ‘cutting edge’.

However, the prospect of promotion to the Premier League, with Burnley and Middlesborough, would sway a lot of players into an obvious choice – it will be interesting to see how this saga unfolds.
