Derby County, Plymouth Argyle set for transfer battle over relegated midfielder

Derby County and Plymouth Argyle are interested in Bristol Rovers’ Kamil Conteh after Rovers’ relegation, reports Football League World.

Derby County has another huge summer ahead of them as they look to build on their excellent end to the season. Under John Eustace, DCFC propelled themselves out of the relegation zone and secured another season of Championship football.

Eustace has won six of his 14 games in charge of the Rams so far, just one less than the seven they had earned in the 32 games before his arrival. He now has a summer window to make his mark on the Derby County squad.

Now, a new target has emerged on the radar.

According to Football League WorldDerby County are keen on Bristol Rovers midfielder Kamil Conteh.

DCFC faces rival interest from relegated Championship side Plymouth Argyle. Argyle were interested in Conteh in January, but no move occurred due to a knee injury he had at the time.

He has been injured since the end of December but is expected to be fit for pre-season. His return to fitness has left both DCFC and Argyle interested in the Sierra Leone international.

Tidy pickup for both sides

Conteh was brilliant in the first half of the season for Bristol Rovers before his injury. He really kicked on with the Gas, with the start of last season being the highest level he had ever played at.

The 22-year-old has bounced between the lower leagues and non-league during his career. Several loan spells when playing for Middlesbrough earned him a move to Grimsby Town, where he impressed.

Conteh has already shown that he is too good to play in League Two and likely will not want to drop back down. A move to Derby County or Plymouth could be perfect for Conteh.

Armstrong replacement?

Derby County are losing Everton loanee Harrison Armstrong now that the season is over. The teenager has starred for DCFC and is likely to get a look-in at Everton during pre-season.

Conteh could be a good replacement for the youngster. He would provide adequate cover in the midfield, which is a key part of Eustace’s system at Derby so far in his tenure.

At 22 years old, he would be a long-term option for DCFC. Conteh will want to test himself in the second tier too as he continues his climb up the EFL.
