The loss, which leaves Wolves without a win and at the bottom of the Premier League table, was particularly disheartening due to the team’s collapse.

O’Neil lamented, “There was no structure,” and added, “A complete loss of control as to what the team were meant to do and where they were meant to be. The worst performance I’ve seen from the group since I’ve been here.”

He also noted the impact of the early goal against them, saying, “The early goal knocks them maybe. But just far too open, no real understanding. Gave ourselves no opportunity at all because of the defensive shape. Even when we had the ball we were all over the place.”

O’Neil concluded with a sense of shock: “It’s a shock. I haven’t seen that from them much.”

The match itself started rapidly, with Brentford nearly continuing their streak of scoring within the first minute, only to miss the mark by seconds when Nathan Collins headed in after one minute and 15 seconds, contributing to Wolves’ heavy defeat.

Wolverhampton Wanderers’ defensive woes were highlighted in a 3-2 defeat against Brentford, with Matheus Cunha temporarily levelling the match early on. However, the joy was short-lived as Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo converted a penalty, surpassing all scorers this season save for Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, after Mario Lemina’s foul inside the box.

Wolves fought back to an equaliser again through Jorgen Strand Larsen, only to see their defence snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, conceding to Christian Norgaard and Ethan Pinnock. Late goals from both teams added to the drama but didn’t change the outcome.

After the match, a despondent Wolves caretaker boss Steve O’Neil stated, “I accept full responsibility,” pinning his team’s failure squarely on his own shoulders. “Players will make mistakes and get things wrong but the responsibility lies with me.”

He further remarked on the need for a strategic review: “Today they weren’t able to carry out what we needed, so there needs to be a rethink around how we go about things.”

Summing up his feelings, he said, “I’m absolutely devastated with the way the team performed today.”

Meanwhile, Brentford manager Thomas Frank spoke lightheartedly about his team’s spirit and work ethic, quipping, “We’ve been joking about it,” and revealing that they had even practised coin tosses during training.

Frank praised his squad’s great mentality, “It took a little bit longer this time, but all jokes aside it’s fantastic.”

“If you look at us over the last four seasons, we always have goals in the team, no matter who is playing. We want to play forward as quick as possible.”
