Fate has a funny way of working in football, and for Kasper Schmeichel, it has finally brought him to the Allianz Arena—just not in the way he originally expected.
Only two years ago, Celtic star Schmeichel was on his way to the airport to sign for Bayern Munich, ready to replace the injured Manuel Neuer. But just as he was preparing to board his flight, the deal fell through at the last minute. Now, he will finally step out at the Allianz—not as a Bayern player, but as Celtic’s No.1, looking to break the hearts of the club his family idolized for generations.
How Schmeichel’s Bayern Move Collapsed
Speaking to SunSport, the Danish goalkeeper opened up on the shock collapse of his move to Bayern in January 2023, when Neuer was sidelined for ten months after suffering a tibia and fibula break in a freak ski accident following Germany’s early World Cup exit.
Schmeichel revealed: “I’d spoken to the hierarchy and I knew what my role was going to be, it was keeping the seat warm until Manuel came back.

“I was more than fine with that, to have played for a club of this stature would have been more than enough, so I said: ‘Send the contract, I don’t even need to know what it is, I’ll sign it anyway.’
“So, yeah, it would have been a dream come true, but it wasn’t to be.
“And look, it’s brought me here now with Celtic, so I’m very happy with that.”
Instead of joining the Bundesliga giants, Schmeichel spent a season at Anderlecht before moving to Celtic last summer, taking over from his good mate Joe Hart.
A New Challenge at the Allianz
Despite missing out on a dream move to Bayern, Schmeichel has embraced his role at Celtic, recently extending his contract for another season. Now, fate has given him a second chance to shine at the Allianz, but this time, he will be doing everything in his power to stop Bayern rather than play for them.
Celtic face a mammoth task in Germany, needing to overturn a 2-1 first-leg deficit to reach the next round of the Champions League. But with Schmeichel finally stepping onto the pitch he once thought would be his home, he will be determined to make it a night to remember—for all the right reasons.
