Ex QPR and Blackpool star with Premier League history available on free transfer
Former QPR winger Matt Phillips has been made a free agent following his release from Championship rivals West Brom. The 33-year-old spent eight years at the Hawthorns after joining in 2016.
Adam Reach, Nathaniel Chalobah, Erik Pieters, Yann M’Vila, Martin Kelly and Jovan Malcolm all join Phillips in leaving the Midlands outfit after the club were beaten in the play-off semi-final by Southampton this month.
In a statement, the club said: “Matty Phillips, who made 255 appearances, will depart after spending eight years at The Hawthorns. The 33-year-old joined the Baggies in July 2016 from QPR and went on to score 31 goals in the Premier League, Sky Bet Championship, Emirates FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
“The versatile winger played a key role in Albion’s promotion to the top flight from the second tier in 2019/20, featuring in 39 games and notching seven goals.
“Phillips made 26 appearances in the Championship for Carlos Corberán’s men in 2023/24, scoring three times. His last strike came at The Hawthorns in a 3-1 victory over Hull City in early November.”
Phillips was signed by Tony Pulis at West Brom in July 2016, moving from QPR for a reported £5.5 million having spent three years at Loftus Road. During that time, the winger played 94 times for the R’s, scoring 14 and assisting 15.
Those appearances included a stint in the Premier League under Harry Redknapp and Chris Ramsey. Phillips returned to the top flight with West Brom when arriving in 2016 and later helped the side back into the Premier League in 2020. Phillips’ career began at Wycombe Wanderers before stints at Blackpool and Sheffield United helped him on his way to QPR.
Taking to social media earlier this week to announce his departure before club confirmation, the former QPR man said: “On behalf of me and my family I would like to say a massive thank you for your support over the last 8 years baggies!
“This club will always be in my heart and I wish it nothing but success moving forward! You have an unbelievable manager and a great group of lads that strive each day to do you all proud! BAGGIES!!”
