Former Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday man once valued at £8m still a free agent five months after exit

When Sheffield Wednesday first loaned in Connor Wickham from Sunderland, they were signing a player the Black Cats had forked out £8m for.

He was an England youth international, seemingly bursting with potential. When the Three Lions unveiled a new home kit in 2011, the Ipswich Town academy graduate was among the youth poster boys selected to feature in its advert.

While he was productive over the course of two initial stints at Hillsborough, he failed to find the target in a subsequent loan spell at Leeds United.

Premier League opportunities still followed, first back at Sunderland and then with Crystal Palace when the Eagles parted with a reported £7m.

He joined Wednesday on loan for a third time in 2020, although by then a future in the Premier League for Wickham looked unlikely. Injuries had hampered his progress and the possibility of a future as England’s focal point had faded.

In recent years, Wickham has been limited to brief stints at EFL clubs, most of which were looking for short-term striking solutions.

He has represented Preston North End, Milton Keynes Dons, Forest Green Rovers, Cardiff City and Charlton Athletic since 2021, but failed to make more than 20 appearances for any.

Charlton released the bruising frontman at the end of last season and the 31-year-old has not yet found a new home. While there is still time for Wickham to enjoy a resurgence at EFL level, his free agency serves as an example of his unfulfilled potential.

He does still appear to have fire in his belly, as the 31-year-old told the South London Press he is not looking to wind down earlier this year.

He said: “I’m at a stage of my career where I still feel as though I have a lot to offer. I’m not just trying to see the game out.”

Although the summer transfer window has long since closed, Wickham could still be snapped up due to his free agent status.

For clubs with spaces left in their squad, the former Premier League prospect may just prove to be an appealing option,
