AFC Wimbledon have made checks on departed QPR man Stephen Duke-McKenna following his loan spell at Sutton United, according to a report by London News Online.

AFC Wimbledon are interested in luring the midfielder to the Cherry Red Records Stadium this summer as they prepare for another year in League Two. They have already signed striker Matty Stevens from Forest Green Rovers.

Duke-McKenna, 23, has cut ties with QPR following the end of the last season and is officially due to become available as a free agent in late June. He is a Guyana international with 18 international caps under his belt so far.

In this latest update regarding his situation by London News Online, Johnnie Jackson’s side are keeping tabs on him as they consider a potential swoop. They finished 10th in the fourth tier last term and were five points shy of the top seven in the end.

AFC Wimbledon could see Duke-McKenna as someone to bolster their midfield department and inject some more quality into their ranks.

He still has time on his side and has potential to develop in the future, despite the setback of being released by QPR.

The Liverpool-born man had spells in the North West at Everton and Bolton Wanderers as a youngster before moving down south to join the Hoops in 2019.

Duke-McKenna has since been a regular for the R’s development side and went on to play for their first-team on 10 occasions.

He had loan spells away at Hemel Hempstead Town, Torquay United and Leyton Orient to get experience under his belt.

Sutton United then came calling in January and he was given the green light to link up with Steve Morison’s side on a temporary basis until the summer.

He played 16 matches for the U’s and scored three goals. They ultimately ended up getting relegated to the National League though.

What next for free agent after QPR exit?

Duke-McKenna will be weighing up his options and despite the disappointment of going down with Sutton United, his stint at Gander Green Lane was a chance for him to put himself in the shop window.

He will want to stay in the Football League and a switch to AFC Wimbledon would make sense for him as he wouldn’t have to move very far. They will be aiming to get promoted to League One next year.
