Gary O’Neil has shared a promising injury update as two of his Wolves stars returned to training for this weekend’s huge match.
The Premier League’s bottom two sides collide at Molineux this weekend as Wolves host Southampton on Saturday.
Wolves are still winless after the first 10 games of the campaign while the Saints grabbed their first three points last time out, as Adam Armstrong’s second-half strike saw off Everton.
The Wanderers must enter the international break with a win on the board, as while Alan Shearer is confident Wolves will stay up, failure to win all three points could see Gary O’Neil lose his job.
Hwang Hee-chan and Sam Johnstone train ahead of Wolves vs Southampton
Ahead of this weekend’s relegation six-pointer, O’Neil has been handed a much-needed boost, confirming that both Hwang Hee-chan and goalkeeper Sam Johnstone have trained.
Hwang has been sidelined since October after suffering an ankle injury while on international duty with South Korea.
The 28-year-old was in poor form at the start of this campaign, failing to score or assist in his first six league games.
Wolves fans will be hoping his form changes for the better once he returns to the pitch, with O’Neil claiming he ‘looked sharp’ in training.
Johnstone, on the other hand, missed the Crystal Palace game through illness but the English shot-stopper is available for this clash after training all week.
“Johnstone is fine. He’s trained all week. Hwang trained today and looked sharp. He’s back fit and we’ll pick the right time for him to be involved,” O’Neil said as per Liam Keen on X.
Hwang Hee-chan can play a crucial role for Wolves
Hwang’s return to training drew mixed responses from the fans. While some were excited to have him back, a lot of others weren’t so pleased after watching him struggle in the first few months.
In truth, the South Korean forward hasn’t looked right since returning from the Asia Cup in February, as he suffered multiple injury issues and a drop off in form.
The Wolves star ended last term on 12 Premier League goals, putting him level with Matheus Cunha.
While Cunha has kicked on since last season, establishing himself as O’Neil’s most valuable asset, Hwang is trending in the other direction.

Everyone associated with the club will be hoping that time to rest and reflect on the sidelines has done him a world of good, as Wolves need him now more than ever to turn up.
With an abundance of attacking talent available, Hwang’s place in the starting XI is no longer guaranteed but if he can return to the form of last season, he could form a deadly trio with Cunha and Jorgen Strand Larsen.
