Huddersfield Town defender Matty Pearson insists his side “want to be climbing the table even higher” following their recent turnaround in form. The Terriers sit fifth in the League One table after Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Exeter City, with Michael Duff’s side having registered 22 points from 13 matches played.
Town dropped to as low as 15th in the division at the beginning of this month following a run of four straight league defeats, but have since picked up three wins and a draw in the league to propel themselves back into promotion contention. Pearson is pleased that the Terriers have managed to get back on track in recent weeks, but is targeting further improvement from his side, as they sit four points off the automatic promotion places and seven points off top spot.
“I think we’ve needed this bounce back from a tough couple of weeks we had a few weeks ago, but we’ve bounced back, and for me personally, I couldn’t be happier playing, scoring and winning,” the defender told BBC Radio Leeds. “It’s just the start, we want to be climbing the table even higher, and that’s the aim.”
Pearson put the Terriers in front against the Grecians on Saturday, as the defender headed home from a corner in the 16th minute. Ben Wiles’ strike from distance in the 63rd minute sealed the points for Town, who registered a fourth straight home win in all competitions.
Pearson was pleased with his side’s display against a team that started the day on the same points as Town, and said: “They were testing us, they wanted us to make the mistakes. They were leaving us at the back on the ball, seeing what we can do.
“I think in general play, we played well. They’re not a poor team, I think they were on joint points with us going into the game, and people dismiss it because it’s Exeter, but they’re a good team. I’m pleased and the team’s pleased. They’ve had a lot of clean sheets building up into our game, and they’ve got some good players. Yeah it’s Exeter, but we have to stand up to them at home. They’re the underdogs really coming here, and I think we did. It’s just a nice feeling to put it to bed at 2-0.”
The centre-back, who netted his third goal in six league matches on Saturday, added on his side’s recent success at set-pieces: “We go through all the videos, it’s not a case of ‘right we’ll do this one this week’. We try and make it fit who we’re playing against, if they set up a certain way we’ll do a certain thing, which played to our advantage today.”
The Terriers now turn their attention away from League One action, and towards their upcoming FA Cup tie. Town face National League outfit Tamworth next up in the first round of the competition on Friday night, 7.45pm kick-off, with the game being shown on BBC Two. Pearson is looking forward to the contest, but acknowledged that his side can’t afford to become complacent despite being two divisions higher up the pyramid.
“The FA Cup’s what everyone wants to play in I think. There’s a bit of an edge to it because it’s a non-league team, and it excites me, I want to play,” the defender said. “Televised games are [there] to showcase what you can do, and I’d like to go there and prove a point of what we’re about. Then again, we can’t take them lightly, it’s going to be their biggest game of the season, so we need to be ready.”
