Inter and Milan officials to be questioned in Ultras Investigation as Serie A calls for “Thatcher-Style Reform”

In the coming days, during the international break, prosecutors will question several Inter Milan and AC Milan officials regarding the recent ultras scandal involving alleged illegal infiltrations that led to multiple arrests.

Calciomercato report that Inter coach Simone Inzaghi, vice-president Javier Zanetti, and Milan captain Davide Calabria are among those to be interviewed. While not under investigation themselves, they have had various interactions with some of the arrested individuals. The outcome of these interviews will determine if further discussions with other senior club officials are necessary.

The investigation references intercepted calls from May 2023, just before the Champions League final. Marco Ferdico, the former Inter ultras leader now in custody on mafia-related charges, allegedly asked Inzaghi to intervene with the club to obtain additional tickets for Istanbul. Ultimately, the ultras received 1,500 tickets, 500 more than initially allocated, which were reportedly resold at exorbitant prices.

Calabria’s questioning will likely focus on a documented meeting with Milan ultras leader Luca Lucci in February 2023, who was also arrested in this investigation and had previously been convicted of drug trafficking.

Serie A CEO Luigi De Siervo commented on the situation, expressing hope for a “Thatcher-style reform” similar to the changes in English football during the 1980s and 1990s. He stated, “I believe what’s happening in Milan can allow us to have a finally free, different stadium. We’re all dreaming of a Thatcher reform that transformed English football and freed stadiums from violent people who exploit them. I hope this is just the beginning of a cycle that allows politics and institutions to enter stadiums and make them available to families again.”

The prosecutors, Paolo Storari (now under police protection for at least six months) and Sara Ombra, intend to proceed swiftly. They are considering a preventive procedure that, in the worst-case scenario, could lead to controlled administration of both clubs due to toxic relationships with the suspects.
