Wolves could be in the market for a new manager soon as supporters are growing concerned with the job Gary O’Neil is doing at Molineux.
It was a dreary afternoon on Saturday as Wolves lost 4-2 against Bournemouth on match day 13 of the Premier League.
Supporters called for Wolves to sack Gary O’Neil after the game, feeling that his time in the dugout is up with no signs of improvement.
The Old Gold looked to have turned a corner before yesterday’s humiliation, having beaten Southampton and Fulham however, how they capitulated against Bournemouth was a reminder of their issues.
Wolves have the worst defence in the Premier League, shipping 32 goals in just 13 matches, and now they should appoint a manager who would fix those problems.
Wolves should appoint David Moyes if Gary O’Neil leaves
The Wolves board should appoint David Moyes as manager if O’Neil leaves the club this month.
Moyes was placed on Wolves’ radar alongside Luton Town boss Rob Edwards as two potential candidates to succeed the Englishman.
However, it’s become clear among many supporters that Moyes could be the right man to steady the ship at Molineux in the short term.
In the Premier League era, the Scotsman has been one of the most prominent managers, with only Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger taking charge of more games than his total of 697.
Aside from his experience in the dugout, Moyes’s style could get the best out of the current players, as he’s notorious for his low-block set-up and counter-attacking football.
Wolves’ struggles defensively are partly down to O’Neil’s philosophy of playing out from the back at any opportunity.
It’s become clear that the defenders aren’t comfortable playing that way, although his persistence has led to so many mistakes, including Jose Sa’s blunder against Bournemouth.
Moyes – who won the Europa Conference League at West Ham – would instantly turn the Wanderers into a team capable of keeping clean sheets, providing them a platform for Premier League survival.
Wolves need to make a decision on O’Neil before the January transfer window
O’Neil’s future at Wolves must be decided one way or another before the January transfer window.
If there is a new manager in the dugout, he needs time to assess his squad and where improvements need to be made.
Wolves are targeting a new centre-back next month, as they’re currently short in that position, while a case can be made to sign a difference-maker in attack and another quality option at left-back.
O’Neil’s transfer plans – in terms of the personnel signed – would be completely different to someone such as Moyes, for instance.
So, with that said, Fosun must decide whether he wants to keep O’Neil in the dugout long-term or make a swift managerial change this month ahead of the January window
