Former Chelsea and Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho is lining up a move for Luton forward Elijah Adebayo as he eyes his first summer signing since taking over at Fenerbahce.
Mourinho, who had been out of work after his dismissal from Roma in January, was appointed as the new manager of Fenerbahce last week. The Turkish club held a ceremony at Ulker Stadium in Istanbul to welcome Mourinho, with thousands of fans gathering inside and outside the ground.
Fenerbahce missed out on the Super Lig title last season despite finishing on 99 points and losing just ONE game, winning 31 of their 38 league matches. They finished three points behind winners Galatasaray. In an attempt to try and win the title next season, Mourinho is looking at strengthening his squad.
According to Turkish daily newspaper Takvim, Mourinho is keen on adding another striker to his squad, with Adebayo at the very top of his list. It’s reported that talks are set to begin in the next couple of days for Adebayo, who was on the agenda at the last transfer meeting between Mourinho and the Fenerbahce board.
Adebayo, 26, enjoyed a productive first-ever season in the Premier League with the Hatters. He scored 10 goals in 27 appearances, including a fine hat-trick against Brighton in January. The London-born frontman could have netted more if it wasn’t for a hamstring problem which kept him out for two months.
It’s no surprise that Adebayo is attracting interest from elsewhere after Luton were relegated back to the Championship, having finished 18th in the top-flight.
As for Mourinho, he spoke of his excitement after being named as the Fenerbahce boss. “Normally a coach is loved after victories, in this case I feel that love before victories. And that for me is a big responsibility that I feel and I promise you that from this moment I belong to this family, this shirt is my skin,” Mourinho said in his address to the delighted Fenerbahce supporters.
“Since the moment I met president Ali Koc and understood his ideas and projects, I wanted to play for you, I want to be the coach of all of you… From the moment I signed my contract, your dreams are now my dreams,” Mourinho added.
