The key reason why Wolves won’t sack Gary O’Neil regardless of result vs Ipswich Town

Wolves face a must-win battle against newly-promoted Ipswich Town on Saturday afternoon.

Molineux will play host to the two sides in the relegation zone as pressure on Gary O’Neil continues to grow.

While Wolves have approached five managers to replace O’Neil, it’s understood that the Englishman still has time to save his career.

Fosun understand that O’Neil is not solely responsible for Wolves’ problems however, there’s little room for continual error as the festive period fast approaches.

Wolves’ plan with Gary O’Neil after Ipswich Town fixture

Despite a terrible start to the season, O’Neil will be in charge of Wolves for the foreseeable future, starting with the weekend’s duel with Ipswich Town.

It’s a must-win game for Wolves who will be at home against their early relegation rivals, with the two sides level on points after 15 games played.

Fans will not want to think about the repercussions of a fourth consecutive loss however, it’s understood that a plan is already in place regardless of the result against Ipswich.

Position Team Played Won Drawn Lost For Against Diff Points
18 Ipswich 15 1 6 8 14 27 -13 9
19 Wolves 15 2 3 10 23 38 -15 9
20 Southampton 15 1 2 12 11 31 -20 5

Following on from the news of Wolves keeping O’Neil on board for the time being, sources close to Molineux News revealed why the club are reluctant to dismiss the Englishman.

We were told that the Old Gold aren’t ready to make a change due to their preference to not have to sack O’Neil.

The club like ‘many aspects’ of what the former Bournemouth coach does, but understands that things do have to improve sooner rather than later.

Despite Wolves only winning twice this season and conceding the most goals in the Premier League, we’re told that the club like the football they see from O’Neil and admire his approach to coaching.

That being said, football is a results business and Wolves can’t wait forever for their form to turn around.

Wolves fans are split on O’Neil verdict

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to suggest why Wolves fans are unhappy with O’Neil, given that the incredibly talented squad sit four points from safety.

In an alternative view, some supporters actually sympathise with O’Neil because of Fosun and the lack of support from the top at Molineux.

O’Neil himself shared that he’s disappointed by his relationship with fans, which has vanished due to the dire form on show for the majority of 2024.

For now, the Englishman’s job is safe thanks to the work he did earlier in his Wolves career, building a strong relationship and identity with the club’s hierarchy.
