Celtic fans are waiting for the January transfer window to burst into life as the clock ticks down towards deadline day.

There’s just over a week left for the Hoops to finalise their winter business before their full attention turns to the chase for a domestic Double.

But the green-and-white faithful will have their fingers crossed that star man Matt O’Riley will still be at Parkhead come February 2.

It was revealed today that Spanish giants Atletico Madrid have tabled a loan offer with an obligation to buy for the 23-year-old midfielder.

However, it’s believed Celts have no intention of losing O’Riley – arguably the best player in Scotland this season – and are preparing to reject the approach.

The Scottish champions are in a strong position after O’Riley recently penned a new contract until summer 2027.

The Denmark international has also attracted interest from La Liga leaders Girona and will command a Scottish record transfer fee if Celts are to even consider selling the fans’ favourite.

One player who could leave Glasgow in the coming days, though, is winger Mikey Johnston.

The 24-year-old spent last season on loan with Portuguese side Vitoria Guimarães but has struggled for form since returning to Celtic Park.

Football Scotland understands the Republic of Ireland international has options in the EFL Championship, with West Brom keen on bringing him to the Hawthorns for the remainder of the campaign.

However, Johnston is waiting on the green-light from Brendan Rodgers to make his exit.

In terms of incomings, a new goalkeeper is on Rodgers’ wishlist this summer.

But the Premiership leaders could be priced out of a move for Liverpool shotstopper Caoimhin Kelleher.

Celts are drawing up a shortlist of long-term replacements for Joe Hart, who is expected to move on when his contract expires in the summer after three successful seasons in Scotland.
