Liverpool have their sights set on one of Sheffield Wednesday’s exciting young stars ahead of the January transfer window.
It’s not been very common at all for Sheffield Wednesday to have so many exciting players in their ranks. But since Danny Rohl’s arrival in 2023, he’s managed to get the Owls’ young stars up and firing.
Now, there’s a growing number of academy stars looking to make their mark at Sheffield Wednesday, with some having already done so.
Bailey Cadamarteri is one, and he’s currently getting some vital experience on loan at Lincoln City. Pierce Charles is another, and he’s now attracting some top interest.
It was recently revealed that Charles has been watched by three Premier League clubs in the build up to the January transfer window.
Sheffield Wednesday News can now reveal who one of the teams is.
Liverpool ‘impressed’ by Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Pierce Charles
Sheffield Wednesday News sources have revealed that Premier League leaders Liverpool are one of the teams to have made checks on 19-year-old Charles this season.
We’re told that Liverpool watched Charles in action for Northern Ireland earlier this season and were ‘impressed’ by what they saw.
The Reds are on the lookout for a young and exciting no.2 goalkeeper and are scouring the EFL for potential options, with Sunderland’s Anthony Patterson another option.
Charles would qualify as a homegrown player and would be a relatively cheap deal for Liverpool too.
Pierce Charles is the ‘future’ of Sheffield Wednesday, says Danny Rohl
Charles is very well-regarded by Rohl and by Owls fans alike. He’s a good shot-stopper but even more impressive with the ball at his feet, making him an ideal goalkeeper for a lot of modern teams.
Speaking earlier in the season, Rohl identified Charles could be the ‘future’ of Sheffield Wednesday, along with teammates Di’Shon Bernard and Gabriel Otegbayo.
The Owls boss said: “We have Di’Shon Bernard, Pierce Charles, Gabriel Otegbayo… they could be the future for this club. This is also the outcome from since I joined in the last year.”
With interest growing in Charles ahead of January, Rohl may be inclined to give the youngster some game time to prove that he is in the first-team picture at Wednesday.
That, or Wednesday might fancy sending him out on loan in January to give him some first-team experience and to keep him from the likes of Liverpool making a swoop.
