Celtic midfielder Luke McCowan has acknowledged that VAR interruptions have been a source of frustration for the team, but not necessarily due to incorrect decisions.
Instead, it’s the disruption to the game’s tempo that has irked Celtic, who like to keep the game moving and make their opponents chase them. VAR breaks give oppositions the time to regroup and have a chance to get their breath back.

McCowan pointed out how the implementation of VAR has caused delays that impact Celtic’s high-tempo style, a hallmark of their play under Brendan Rodgers.
Speaking about the challenges posed by the technology, McCowan said: [RecordSport]
“It does bring a lot of delays, especially when teams come to Celtic Park.
“I felt it myself when I came here with Dundee. You want the game to be as fluent as possible and sometimes it isn’t, which is not great.
“That’s not just VAR at times, it can be how the referee manages the game. That’s the only downside to VAR, the delays. Sometimes I think it takes five or 10 minutes to put the telly on!
“It’s not my place to say whether it’s working or not. Everyone in the game has it now so we just need to go along with it. You just hope it gets the decisions right for football.”
Celtic have had their share of contentious moments involving VAR, with manager Brendan Rodgers and players like McCowan noting its impact on the flow of their matches.
There have also been decisions going against the Hoops, which Brendan Rodgers hasn’t shied away from. However, the gaffer has admitted that there will still be human error with VAR with those operating the technology.
It’s hard to find many people, especially in Scotland, who are in favour of VAR, but it’s here to say.
There is a lot more transparency with the equipment being used this season, with Willie Collum hosting the VAR show once a month to go over contentious decisions.
