Wolves star Matheus Cunha is being tracked by rival Premier League clubs in case Wolves suffer relegation at the end of the season.
This is according to former Man United, Aston Villa and West Ham scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that a cut-price deal for the striker could be on the cards.
Gary O’Neil’s side have picked up just one point from their opening seven Premier League games while conceding 21 goals, raising their fears of relegation.
As a result, rival clubs are keeping close tabs on their best players and are ready to pounce should they find themselves in the bottom three come May.
Cunha, 25, is widely considered Wolves’ most valuable player, but relegation would mean a cut-price deal would be on the cards.
His contract at Molineux is set to run until 2027, but there is a feeling he could be one of the first out of the door if things do not improve this season.
Wolves, meanwhile, remain in a perilous financial situation, as football finance expert Stefan Borson previously told Football Insider that they are “stuck” after coming close to PSR breaches in back-to-back seasons.
Premier League clubs eye Matheus Cunha deal in Wolves relegation verdict
Wolves had already been forced to sell star players Max Killman and Pedro Neto in the summer to help balance the books, and Cunha could be the next big name out of the door.
Brown, who has a wealth of experience in the game including at struggling clubs, explained that they could be forced to consider offers for the Brazilian, with top clubs keeping a close eye on his situation.
“Cunha is a very impressive player who could play for a top team,” he told Football Insider.
“I’ve heard clubs in the Premier League are already keeping an eye on his situation.
“As a chief scout, you’re always looking at teams like Wolves who’ve got some top players but could be in a bit of trouble with relegation.
“These top sides are always planning deals like this before it happens so they can get ahead.
“Because if Wolves do go down, given their finances at the moment, I’d expect him to be available for a lower price than you’d otherwise expect.
“Every team in the league will be keeping an eye on what happens with him, and if they’re not, they should be.
“Even the clubs at the very top of the table should be interested, and from what I’ve heard, a few of them are tracking the possibility of that deal.”
