Neil Lennon shares the two signings Brendan Rodgers needs to make at Celtic in January

Neil Lennon has shared where he believes Celtic must strengthen after watching his old team suffer a defeat to Hearts last weekend.

Brendan Rodgers has had to deal with the backlash of back-to-back defeats to the Edinburgh side and Kilmarnock but Lennon believes if he strengthens two key areas in the team, it would go a long way to helping improve fortunes on the pitch.

Lennon said [PLZ Soccer], “I don’t think he’s [Callum McGregor] a great number six. I think he’s far better playing that sort of 6/8 role and getting in and scoring goals.

“So for me, a physical presence in the midfield is a must.

“And obviously, if people don’t think or if Brendan doesn’t think Oh the man to supplement Kyogo then another number nine, another goal scorer.”

I would suggest Lennon adds another two to that list in a goalkeeper and left-back but let’s take his comments at face value for the moment.

A striker is obvious. With Kyogo, Maeda and Oh almost certainly guaranteed to be going to the Asia Cup, Rodgers will be short in the attacking areas.

However, I would say that he gets a striker that fits into his system because there is no point going for a Kyogo-type frontman if Rodgers continues to play how he has been at Celtic.

A holding midfielder is a necessity. I agree with Lennon, Callum McGregor just isn’t that kind of player.

The Celtic captain is a master at dictating play and being penetrative but as a midfield enforcer, forget it.

So let’s hope Rodgers has these players on his list. Let’s hope negotiations are already underway for them.

Let’s hope the Celtic board parts with the cash. It is Christmas after all.
