Rangers signing Neraysho Kasanwirjo permanently from Feyenoord is “hugely unlikely” following his season-ending injury, according to the Daily Record.
The newspaper reported in its print edition (2 December, page 42) that while the Gers retain a permanent option from the Eredivisie side, his knee injury has cast this into doubt.
Kasanwirjo has been recalled to Rotterdam to begin his rehabilitation after surgery on a suspected ACL tear, and with the 22-year-old unlikely to play again this term, any return to Ibrox could be off the cards.
Neraysho Kasanwirjo Rangers transfer thrown into doubt
Kasanwirjo returning to Rotterdam barely four months into his season-long loan spell at Ibrox will be a crushing blow for Philippe Clement, who loses his most versatile defender for the rest of the campaign.
So far this term, the young Dutchman had been utilised both in central defence and on either flank for Clement’s side, providing what appeared to be a potential long-term successor to James Tavernier.
His injury, however, deprives Clement of a useful option in several positions – particularly at right-back – and surely puts to bed any chance of Tavernier leaving the club in the January transfer window.
Dujon Sterling, who also missed the Gers’ 1-0 win at St. Johnstone on Sunday, now appears to be the only alternative to Tavernier on the right flank of the defence, at least until January comes around.
Kasanwirjo’s three starts from 12 appearances suggest Clement didn’t trust him completely as a first-team regular, and it remains to be seen whether he’ll try to sign the defender permanently next summer.
