Any doubts about the future of head coach Miron Muslic at Plymouth Argyle appear to be over after the appointment of Tom Randle as the club’s new head of recruitment.
Randle has plenty of experience within the world of scouting and recruitment in football, including working for Crystal Palace, Rotherham United and Norwich City, as well as in the United States with MLS side Houston Dynamo.
Most significantly from an Argyle perspective, though, Randle was the head scout at Belgian club Cercle Brugge for 12 months from October 2021 and during that time worked with Muslic, who was initially the assistant coach before stepping up to the main role, so they know each other well.
Muslic refused to be drawn about his future after Argyle’s relegation from the Championship was confirmed, saying he was ’empty and heart broken’ and has been spending time with his family at home in Austria ever since the season-ending game against Leeds United. Now, he has someone he knows well in a key role at the club.
In the statement which announced the appointment of Randle, Argyle chief executive officer Andrew Parkinson said: “He brings extensive recruitment experience and, having worked with Miron at Cercle Brugge, already understands the players who best fit his style.”
That is a very telling comment. It means the head coach and head of recruitment will be on the same page. While there are never any guarantees of success when it comes to player signings, there is a better chance of that when people are aligned.
Recruitment is going to be absolutely vital for Argyle as they look to regroup after their relegation and build a squad capable of making a promotion push in League One next season.
Muslic is not the only Argyle staff member that Randle has a link too, either. He became the director of identification and recruitment at Houston Dynamo in November 2022 after leaving Cercle Brugge.
During his time there, Argyle’s assistant head coach Adin Osmanbasic also worked for the MLS side, first in their academy and later with the first team, before he joined up with Muslic at Cercle Brugge last year so Randle will also know him.
In addition to Randle, Argyle have also appointed their former midfielder David Fox in the new role of head of football operations, so he will work closely with Muslic and Randle as part of the restructured football staff at the club.
