Judith Pamela Brennan, the Ottawa woman accused of second-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of Robert Vides on Thursday, appeared in court Friday and was remanded into custody at the Ottawa–Carleton Detention Centre until her next court appearance.
In court, the Crown read into the record that Brennan stood accused of stabbing her boyfriend.
But a person who knows Brennan said Saturday that the romance was fairly new and quickly turned sour when the pair moved in together. The person, who requested anonymity, described Vides as “abusive” and said Brennan had called Ottawa police several times.
Brennan, who was known as Pam, and Vides recently moved in together to another pay-as-you-go apartment on Presland Street in the Overbrook neighbourhood on the other side of the Rideau River from the Wilbrod building.
The stabbing took place at the Presland address at about 4:45 a.m. on Feb. 19, police said.
Brennan was represented in court Friday by Cassandra Richards, who declined to comment on the case when reached Saturday.
Brennan’s next court appearance is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 28. In the meantime, by court order she is prohibited from communicating with several potential witnesses.
The homicide is Ottawa’s fourth to date in 2025.
The first took place Jan. 10, when Wilson Sabarros, 58, was found dead in a home on Pondhollow Way in Barrhaven. Mia Tajada, 28 and Omar Assaad, 26, both from Ottawa, face charges of first-degree murder in that case.
Almost a month later, on Feb. 9, Amr Zohair, 40, an inmate at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre, died three days after being injured in an alleged assault. Marc Lebrun-Fortin, 44, also an inmate, has been charge with first-degree murder in that case.
On Feb. 15, 25-year-old Omar Jonathan Grant of Ottawa was pronounced dead in hospital after receiving “penetrative trauma” following a disturbance at St. Laurent Place, a seven-storey, 112-unit Ottawa Community Housing apartment building on St. Laurent Boulevard.
Jacob Blanchard, 25, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and assault with a weapon in connection with Grant’s death. A countrywide arrest warrant was also issued for the arrest of 25-year-old Samuel Laurin-Gauvreau of Ottawa on those same charges.
In 2024, Ottawa reported a record number of homicides for a single year with 25.
