Paul Warne makes Derby County exit admission as Rams set for January departures

Paul Warne admits Conor Washington could be among the “few players” who are set to leave Derby County his month.

Derby County's Conor Washington could be a contender for a January exit.

The Rams head coach is eager to bolster his squad for the second half of the season – and adding more firepower to his attack is chief among his priorities. Derby will have to release players in order to bring them in and there are several fringe players whose futures are under scrutiny.

Washington is perhaps top of the list, with the striker having yet to kick a ball in the Championship this season. Tawanda Chirewa’s loan from Wolves will no doubt come under review too.

Asked whether Washington would be at the club beyond January, Derby head coach Warne said: “Possibly not. You have to shuffle the pack and Conor wants to play more than he obviously is.

“There will be a few players leaving. He could be one of them. If not, then that’s also fine. I am not one to drive them out of the training ground and throw their boots at them. It’s about the opportunity and whether it is better than what he currently has.”

Washington’s move to Derby from Rotherham has not worked out in a spell that has not been helped by injury. After his switch to Pride Park, he has made just 22 appearances with his last game coming in a 3-0 win over Leyton Orient in April.
