Philippe Clement ‘non-negotiable’ verdict shared ahead of Rangers v Aberdeen

Rangers beating both Aberdeen and Fraserburgh in their next couple of games is a “non-negotiable” thing for the future of Philippe Clement, Alasdair Lamont has said.

The Belgian has been under constant scrutiny this term with fans calling for his head for most of the season due to the poor performances the Ibrox outfit have put in.

While the 50-year-old’s future seems set to be with Rangers after what Patrick Stewart said in his briefing, it feels like things need to turn around soon otherwise consequences will surely have to be carried out.

Writing for the BBC Sport website (15 January), Lamont shared his thoughts on the potential of Clement getting into the last 16 of the Europa League.

“If he could guide them directly into the last 16, his stock would rise once more and even if the play-off route is required – still the more likely scenario – it would be a tremendous achievement and one for which Clement and the players would deserve great credit,” he wrote.

“A Europa League trip to Old Trafford beckons but before that Aberdeen then Fraserburgh in the Scottish Cup must be dealt with. Victory in both those games is surely non-negotiable.”

Philippe Clement has a lot to prove at Rangers

Somehow, Clement has remained as the manager of Rangers despite the consistent poor form his team have found themselves in.

Granted, the Belgian may have led his squad to second place in the Scottish Premiership but the fact that 16 points separate them from the top spot is nothing short of a travesty.

While it’s clear that Stewart and Fraser Thornton want to create some sort of stability at the club after their recent history of chopping and changing managers, it feels like Clement’s time as the Gers’ boss has run its course.

At the moment, it feels like the fanbase is all in agreeance that a new face needs to be brought in to lead the senior squad otherwise, they’ll be left in the dust of Celtic for seasons to come.

Nothing is yet set in stone of course but unless things turn around soon, it’s hard to see how Stewart and Thornton can justify keeping the Belgian at the helm.
