Plymouth Argyle are reportedly monitoring the situation surrounding Swansea City midfielder Jay Fulton ahead of their 2025/26 League One return.
The Scottish midfielder is under contract at Swansea City, but a deal elsewhere could unlock the door for Fulton to leave the Championship side in search of regular first-team minutes next season.
The deal in question is Swansea’s current pursuit of Lincoln City midfielder Ethan Erhahon, with that move allowing Fulton to potentially leave the club.
Fulton to Plymouth?
As reported by journalist Alan Nixon, Plymouth Argyle remain in the hunt for Fulton as they target an immediate return to the Championship following relegation last season.
There is currently no reveal as to whether Fulton will be leaving Swansea on loan or whether the Erhahon deal will allow him to depart on a permanent contract and make a fresh start in Devon.
The move also seems unlikely to be affected despite the departure of Plymouth Argyle manager Miron Muslic, who joined German second-tier side FC Schalke 04 earlier this week.
How did he fare last season?
Fulton made a fair amount of appearances for Swansea City last season; the majority of them arrived off the substitutes’ bench.
Across all competitions, the 31-year-old made 34 appearances for the Swans, registering his only goal contribution during a 2-1 win against Plymouth Argyle in December.
This was 12 matches fewer than he managed in the previous season, suggesting that he could be seen more as a squad option for Swansea moving forward, rather than a regular starter.
This thought continues to fuel speculation that Fulton’s time at Swansea City may be coming to an end this summer.
Would this be a good move for Plymouth?
Fulton is an experienced midfielder at Championship level but now faces the reality of dropping down a tier next season.
Plymouth has already secured the signing of Coventry City midfielder Jamie Paterson on a free transfer, a player that will be familiar with Fulton due to their time together at Swansea.
His leadership in midfield would be a significant boost for Plymouth Argyle, considering a lack of leaders contributed to them losing their place in the Championship last season.
With a lack of starts last season and the possibility of Fulton losing another spot in the pecking order, this seems like the right deal for all parties.
