Portsmouth have explored the signing of Luton Town man Shandon Baptiste but are set to turn their focus elsewhere, as per The News.
Portsmouth are looking to build on their first season in the Championship after staving off relegation. Pompey had some nervy spells, especially after a poor start, but they recovered well thanks to some fantastic home form.
Pompey will hope they can build a solid campaign on the foundation of a great Fratton Park record, but improving on the road is a must.
New signings will help John Mousinho and co. do just that, and several players are on the radar. However, it seems one man who will not be turning out in royal blue is Shandon Baptiste.
After links between Portsmouth, Oxford United, and Luton Town man Baptiste, The News has clarified that the Hampshire outfit are set to turn their focus elsewhere.
They state Pompey did explore the possibility of signing the 27-year-old, who previously played alongside Mousinho at the Kassam Stadium.
However, he would instantly become a top earner at Fratton Park, and with Portsmouth more focused on players with significant resale value whom they can develop, Baptiste doesn’t quite fit the profile. It is added his injury record has also been factored in.
Portsmouth could benefit from an experienced addition
Portsmouth has recruited some very talented players by moving for prospects who are yet to hit their prime. They have looked far and wide for such additions, recruiting from Europe and the relatively untapped Australian market.
However, the importance of experience and maturity cannot be overlooked.
Pompey signed Isaac Hayden on loan in the January transfer window, and while the Newcastle United midfielder might not have been an instant hit, he played with a notable maturity and discipline. Some youngsters can display this, but sometimes such a presence is only offered by someone who has been around the block a bit.
Baptiste would have fit this mold, but with wages and injuries seemingly taken into account, Portsmouth may find a better option elsewhere.
Baptiste should not be short of options
Portsmouth may have opted to look elsewhere after exploring a Baptiste swoop, but the Grenada International should not be short of options as the summer window progresses.
As touched on before, Oxford United was among those also said to be keen on tempting him away from Luton Town. Other clubs will take his wages and injury record into account, just as Pompey did, but his ability and experience could make him a very smart Championship addition.
Plenty of time remains in the window for the former Brentford man to make a move if League One football with the Hatters is not on his radar.
