Preston interim manager Mike Marsh has stood down from his role just five days into his tenure.

Marsh’s shock announcement follows Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to Swansea City.

He had been given temporary charge of the club alongside coaching staff Peter Murphy and Ched Evans, following Ryan Lowe’s departure after just one game.

Lowe left his position at the Championship club after just the first game of the season – a 2-0 loss to Sheffield United – but had managed the team since 2021.

North End saw off the Black Cats in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night, but were thumped 3-0 in Wales by the Swans.

Marsh did not show up for post-match media duties after Saturday’s games, having informed club bosses he wouldn’t be applying for the full-time position, nor would he coach the team any further.

The club confirmed his departure shortly after, releasing a statement saying: ‘On Monday 12th August, it was announced that Mike Marsh, along with Peter Murphy and Ched Evans, would take charge of the first team fixtures against Sunderland and Swansea City.

‘Following today’s defeat in South Wales, Mike has thanked the club for the opportunity to take interim charge, but he does not wish to apply for the job on a permanent basis or take the club forward.

‘Mike will therefore leave the club with our sincere thanks and best wishes for the future.
