Three Championship clubs who survived the drop last season are looking to poach a relegated side.
QPR are set to compete with Championship rivals Millwall and Sheffield Wednesday for the transfer of Rotherham United defender Cameron Humphreys.
The three Championship sides have been linked with interest in the 25-year-old by Football Insider following Rotherham’s relegation from the second tier at the end of last season. It was a season to forget for the South Yorkshire club, with just 27 points on the board, but Humphreys proved one of the few positives during the campaign.
The defender made 25 appearances for the side in the Championship over a campaign ravaged by a tear close to the tendon in October. That was described by then Millers manager Matt Taylor as ‘about as serious a hamstring injury as you can get’, keeping him out of action until February.
At Loftus Road, Marti Cifuentes entrusted Jake Clarke-Salter and Steve Cook at the heart of defence to lead the club’s relegation battle but the former has been heavily linked with a summer move away from the club – the likes of Wolves, Crystal Palace and Celtic all said to be interested. Meanwhile, Neil Harris is overseeing his first transfer window with the Lions and there is yet to be confirmation on a deal for Spurs man Japhet Tanganga following his release.
QPR and Millwall are joined by fellow relegation battlers from last season, Sheffield Wednesday, in sharing transfer interest in Humphreys. The defender has just one year left on his contract at the New York stadium and, according to the report, Rotherham could look to ‘cash in on their prized asset’ as they prepare for the League One campaign.
Jake Clarke-Salter has been linked with a move away from Loftus Road this summer.
Humphreys began his career at Manchester City, making two appearances for the Premier League giants, before moving to Zulte Waragem in 2019. He returned to the UK to join Rotherham United in the summer of 2022, helping the side survive the drop in his first campaign.
Humphreys does already have a fan in new Rotherham manager Steve Evans, who named the player among two others as ‘ones that stand out to me’ in his early weeks at the club.
