QPR tie up new contract deal for defender ahead of next season

QPR defender Jake Leahy has penned his first professional contract, as announced by their official club website.

QPR have handed the full-back a deal after his impressive performances for their Development Squad in this past season. The prospect started the campaign with the Under-18’s before making the step up.

Leahy, 18, has been on the books of the Championship side since the age of 12 and has risen up through their ranks over the past six years. He will now be looking to break into the first-team in the near future.

After penning fresh terms, he told the club website“I’m over the moon. I’ve worked so hard for so long for this moment and I’m really proud.

“It’s a big moment for myself and my parents who have supported me for all of these years.  I’ve taken my opportunity this season and I’ve enjoyed it, too. I feel like I’ve adapted and been a consistent performer for the Development Squad.”

QPR secure deal

QPR will have high hopes for Leahy and he will be a player to keep an eye out for down the line.

The fact he has already broken into their Development Squad under the guidance of Paul Furlong.

He will be eager to keep his place in the side heading into the next campaign before eventually crossing the bridge into the senior set-up.

The Hoops will have a decision to make regarding whether to keep hold of him or loan him out to another team to get some experience under his belt.

QPR have cut ties with a whole host of young players this summer and their youth department has been the subject of a significant shake-up recently.

Harry Cant, Trent Rendall, Arkell Jude-Boyd, Deon Woodman, Samuel Sackey, Hamzad Kargbo, Nathan Jeche, Micah Anthony, Joseph Ajose and Rafferty Pedder are all moving on as free agents.

However, Leahy has survived the chop and will be looking to progress and develop with the London outfit over the next couple of years.

What next for QPR?

Marti Cifuentes has done a great job since taking over at QPR from Gareth Ainsworth.

The Spaniard kept them up this past term and will want his team to carry on their momentum into the next campaign.

They have a big few months ahead now on the transfer front as they look to bolster their ranks and bring in some more quality.
