Rangers could still secure Ben Johnson transfer as two-word Crystal Palace update emerges

Rangers still have a lot to play for between now and the end of the season, but Philippe Clement and his team will already have one eye on the summer transfer window.

It is widely expected that there may be plenty of movement both in and out of Ibrox come the end of the season, with the likes of James TavernierJohn Lundstram, Borna Barisic and Connor Goldson all being linked with potential exits.

Updates around players who could potentially be coming into Glasgow have appeared slightly less regularly but in the last days, the Gers have been linked with West Ham defender Ben Johnson.

Reports suggest that the Light Blues had made contact with the 24-year-old’s representatives over a potential summer switch, with both Leeds United and Crystal Palace holding an interest in securing his signature [The Athletic, 30 April].

However, the Gers’ hopes of getting a move over the line were quickly dashed when the Daily Record (1 May) reported that the versatile defender was now set to complete a move to Selhurst Park instead of Ibrox.

Will Rangers sign Ben Johnson during the summer transfer window at Ibrox?

But it now seems as though Johnson’s move to Palace may not be quite as set in stone as initially reported after Sun journalist Alan Nixon shared a brand new update on the transfer saga via social media.

A Eagles fan asked Nixon on X on Wednesday (10 May) if Johnson would be joining Palace in the summer to which he replied: “Doubt that.”

While this update doesn’t exactly confirm that a move to Ibrox is definitely back on the cards, it does suggest that the race remains open for teams to secure the defender’s signature, which will be a boost to the Gers.

Clement needs to strengthen his backline during the off-season as his side has been guilty of conceding far too many goals this term. Johnson would be an excellent option to have, particularly because of his versatility.

Whether or not Rangers’ interest will progress as the end of the season draws closer remains to be seen, but it would be premature to rule them out of the running permanently judging by this latest update.

This deal could be one to keep an eye on over the coming weeks and months.
