Rangers should push to sign Albion Rrahmani if a deal is available because the club needs to upgrade on Cyriel Dessers, says Derek Ferguson.
Football Scotland reported on 17 June that a Romanian source says the Light Blues are in pole position to sign the Kosovan striker, despite his Rapid Bucharest president Viorel Moldovan claiming the “very important” player could stay at the club.
Former Celtic and Hibs boss Neil Lennon is now Rrahmani’s manager and Ferguson has joked his long-term rivalry with the Light Blues might lead him to push the price up to make it difficult for Philippe Clement.
But while he appreciates what Dessers brings the pundit insists Rangers needs to bring in “killers” in front of goal.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News he laughed: “Neil’s no giving us him. If he’s a top player, a top striker, who can bang in 40 goals, Neil Lennon ain’t him to Rangers Football Club.
“I’m only kidding, I don’t know. Again, it’s another name that’s out there.
“We need a quality striker. Dessers has been so up and down. Yes he’s scored 22 goals, but it should have been 42.
“He’s a nice big fella, I get that, but nice doesnae win you things. We need guys who’ve got grit, determination, guys that are killers.
“That’s the type that we need at the club, we don’t need nice players, we need winners.
“Rrahmani, if he was to fit the bill, listen, get him in if there’s a deal to be done. But I think Neil might be adding on a couple of million or so, so he would, to make it a wee bit difficult for us.”
Could Neil Lennon complicate Rangers transfer pursuit?
According to Digi Sport in Romania (6 June) Rapid have insisted a deal that sees Rrahmani leave the club this summer will be a club record if it happens, meaning it will cost a minimum of €5million [£4.2m], but the chances are it will be significantly higher.
Players who can score regular goals nearly always cost, and 17 goals from 26 games in his debut season in Bucharest looks to have multiplied his value hugely after signing for a reported €600,000 [£507,000], but with Digi Sport reporting the Light Blues are ready to bid €6m [£5.07m] it may be doable.
In order to afford such a move and still complete the rest of the required business this summer it would be a huge boost to start making some money from sales of squad players, with Sam Lammers exit potentially crucial.
