Reading FC star on exit, Luton Town and Eamonn Dolan

Luton Town defender Tom Holmes had admitted he ‘can’t rule not coming back’ to Reading in the future.

The 24-year-old made his 133rd and potentially final appearance for his boyhood club in Saturday’s 3-2 win over Blackpool.

Coming off the bench, it was the centre-back’s first involvement for three months after suffering with a back injury.

Spending 16 years rising through the ranks with the Royals, Holmes joined Premier League Luton in January before returning on loan until the end of the season to support the team’s fight to stay in League One.

Receiving a standing ovation when coming on in the second half, Holmes had a special moment with supporters during the Lap of Appreciation.

Reading Chronicle:

Speaking emotionally after the game, regularly interrupted with chanting from his soon-to-be ex-teammates, Holmes labelled it ‘the end of an era.’

“I’ll always be a Reading fan- it’s all I know. They will forever be in my heart, and I can’t rule out coming back at some point- in Club 1871 or preferably on the pitch. We certainly can’t rule out me being in the stands because I’m a Reading fan and I love the club.

“I’ve spoken a lot with TMac [Tom McIntyre] about the way he left, and he was particularly upset that he didn’t have a moment like I had today, so I’m very grateful for that.

Reading Chronicle:

“You could say it’s the end of an era, we’re the last generation with Eamonn Dolan’s influence so it was fitting that we could have a moment at the end in front of his stand to credit all his hard work over the years.”

Luton Town have three top-flight games remaining and currently sit in the relegation zone one point adrift of safety.

“It’s a new challenge and I’m straight in with them to see the level,” Holmes commented on his move to Kenilworth Road. “I will get ready, have a couple of weeks with them and in the off-season get ready to hit the ground running.”
