Celtic defender Greg Taylor has yet to sign a new contract with the Hoops, and with the left-back’s current deal expiring in the summer, it appears that he is set to leave on a free transfer.
Kieran Tierney is set to return to Celtic, having penned a pre-contract in January. The left-back will join the Hoops on a four-year deal and will be 28 years old when he returns, meaning Celtic will be getting a prime Kieran Tierney next season.
Taylor himself is 27 and in the peak of his career. He doesn’t want to play second fiddle to the Arsenal defender, with reports emerging today that he is set to join a Champions League side.
Croatian outlet Sportske Novosti reports that Taylor is expected to join Dinamo Zagreb in the summer. Negotiations with Dinamo have been ongoing for a long time, and Celtic have received offers from other clubs, but Dinamo appears to be the most concrete option.
With Brendan Rodgers previously stating that he wants to keep Taylor at the club, a contract extension has yet to be agreed. With Tierney set to rejoin Celtic, the longer the season goes on, the more likely it appears that the Celtic left-back will leave on a free transfer in the summer.
Celtic are reportedly unwilling to meet Taylor’s wage demands, which remain the main sticking point in contract negotiations.
Given Tierney’s consistent injury record, Taylor would still get plenty of game time next season. However, the Hoops are reluctant to offer him the wages of a regular starter for a player who now looks likely to be a second choice if he stays.
