Sheffield Wednesday fearful of ‘big, big’ injury with scan booked for in-form man

Akin Famewo has been a revelation in Sheffield Wednesday’s defence this season – but his manager fears he could be set for an extended spell on the side lines after hobbling out of their comeback win at Portsmouth.

The Owls fought back from a goal down at half-time to take a 2-1 win courtesy of Josh Windass and a wonder strike by man of the match Michael Smith. The game was marred however by injury to one of their most in-form men in Famewo, who was substituted in the 29th minute with what looked to be a serious injury.

Pressed on the initial prognosis for Famewo, who immediately pulled up clutching his thigh after an attempt to clear the ball, Owls boss Danny Röhl grimaced and speaking to The Star said: “At the moment I think it could be a big, big muscle injury. When you go in such a moment, you are straight away down? (squirms). Maybe the area is better than when he is holding at the back (hamstring), but we will see. We will scan. I feel for him, he has been very strong.

“We will find solutions and we have to be honest, we are still just in October, it is a busy time with November and December to come. With this we have to recover, recover, recover, we need rotation with the squad.”

Dominic Iorfa came on and produced a stellar performance at the heart of defence with Di’Shon Bernard taking up the left-hand side role vacated by Famewo. Any absence for the former Norwich City man would leave Wednesday short of a natural left-sided defender.

Röhl said: “It’s a big shame, he has been in a good way and very strong game by game. This is the thing, when you have a lot of games. I have been asked about rotation and we rotated again five players, we use the squad and try to protect them, but we cannot do it in every position because we need to keep a core.

“I had a lot of thinking the last nights about how we go in this game and in the end we have one more injury and another with Olaf, now a second one in three days. We need the squad, we need the full squad to be ready in this league.”
